Creating Your Own Reality

By Charles Wm. Skillas, PhD, DD, BCH, CI, FNGH, MCCHt

When I first heard about creating our own reality, I was sure that it did not apply to me. I was in a bad place even though I read these words about creating your own reality, I didn't believe that they were true. Why would anyone deliberately create a reality where they were miserable? Because of the problems I was having I thought that these words were simply New Age garbage. I examined my life and tried to figure out why I would do such a thing to myself. The first thing that occurred to me was that I was punishing myself by creating a life for myself that was so bad. I concluded that the statement of creating your own reality was not true. If it was, then I was nuts.

As I grew older and became involved in hypnotherapy and started working with other people to help them have better lives, I slowly began getting an idea of what the phrase "creating your own reality" was about. As I lived longer and worked with more people, the truth of this seemingly-crazy expression began to become clearer. I also read a lot that was written by intelligent people, and I noted that these happy intelligent people did not seem to have the same problems I was having creating my own reality. From what I could see, they were creating pretty good realities for themselves. They seemed happy, successful and sure of themselves. If they were creating successful good lives for themselves, why couldn't I do it also instead of the mess I created for myself?

I prayed a lot and I got guidance from the Almighty. I happened across an article by Brian Weiss that help me put this all into the proper perspective and allowed me to change my life and help my clients who have the same kind of problems that I have. The article I read seemed to be an answer to my problem. The article talked about letting go of the past and how to improve the future. This hit me in a very strong way, and I use it for myself every day and I use it for my clients with great success. The article talks about the present and the problems I was having with life and it gave suggestions which grabbed me. The article said the following:

The past is like the wake of the ship. Like the wake of the ship, the past does not steer the ship. It only tells you where the ship has been. Therefore, the wake has no power over where the ship is going to go in the future. Therefore, let go of the past wake and create your own future. This analogy applies directly to our lives. Our lives in the future are created not by the wake of the ship, which is the past, but by the decisions we make in the ever-present moment. Since these decisions are conscious decisions, we have conscious control over where the ship goes. Since we are the ship, we consciously create our own future moment by moment by the decisions that we make about the next moment. Therefore, we are creating our life moment by moment, consciously, by the decisions that we make, and thereby we are creating our own reality moment by moment by the same decisions we make in the ever-present moment.

So, let us let go of the past without regret and no longer allow it to influence our future. Instead, let us consciously take control of our lives by taking control of our mind, which is our servant and is not in control of our lives. We control our lives, not our mind. Our mind is our servant, it is not our controller, so take charge of your mind and create the future you want. Become the master of your mind and therefore of yourself. Decide what you want and where you want to go and then create that life consciously by knowing where you want to go and making the correct decisions every moment. When we do this we change our life forever and we become happy and productive and full of self-love for life and for ourselves. What a beautiful way to take charge of our lives by deciding what we want and then going after it with unconditional self-love.
